IMERYS has launched a lithium extraction project on their kaolin mine concession in the Allier region. To date, the project is in the exploration phase. The aim is to estimate the amount of lithium that can be mined, to define the feasibility of mining in France, and to assess the project’s impact on water resources, biodiversity and socio-economic aspects.
Lithium is a metal in ever-increasing demand, particularly for the manufacture of batteries needed for electric mobility, with forecast growth of 18% per year between now and 2025. In the context of the energy transition, industries are seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and relocate their activities. Recent geopolitical crises have highlighted the need for access to sovereign resources.
France’s geological diversity is a rich source of mineral resources. With the aLiNA program, AVENIA and its members inform and initiate actions to support secure supplies of materials and metals. Our role is to provide the keys to understanding for the various stakeholders, so that new projects can be developed locally.
As part of the public debate, AVENIA wished to give its opinion through this player’s booklet. This project is convincing, and in line with current and future concerns about sovereignty, reindustrialization and securing supplies of critical metals and materials. It aims to manage water responsibly, limit nuisance (biodiversity, dust, noise, etc.) and reduce carbon footprint. It will also help to create local jobs, relocate industrial skills and revitalize industry in France.
